EXPLORE THE VIRTUAL EXHIBITION

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

a certain kind of courage is anGie seah’s deeply personal tribute to Guan Huat Dragon Kiln in Jalan Bahar, one of Asia’s few remaining traditional kilns. Measuring 43 meters long, 2.4 meters wide, and 2.1 meters high, this dormant kiln, despite having ceased its operations twenty years ago, remains a testament to cultural heritage and architectural significance.

Evoking the mighty and mythical dragon, the many scales and shadows in this site-specific exhibition refract the thermal and temporal processes that make humanity material. In counterpoint to the comforts of consistency and control, the very terrain of the kiln challenges us to resensitise to our surroundings and tread with care; injuxtaposition with fragility and impermanence, the elemental waves that restore conditions for evolution lick and limn every surface of this historic monument. At this particular confluence of art, environment, and heritage, the intrinsic value of clay as a creative medium breathes new life.

a certain kind of courage thus begets a certain kind of courage: to meet the challenges of the human condition with heart and humour; to face brokenness and pain with curiosity and compassion; to rekindle intergenerational and intercultural imagination with collective contemplation and collaborative play.

LISTEN TO THE ALBUM

A sonic accompaniment to the eponymous exhibition through which anGie seah reanimates Guan Huat Dragon Kiln at Jalan Bahar Clay Studios, this album traces the trials of perseverance and the triumphs of courage.

Shaped by the improvisational synergy among collaborators and instruments, the four tracks unfold spontaneously in conditions of uncertainty that, with attunement and trust, transform into music. If architecture is likened to frozen music, let this album ride those raw waves of resilience that never rest.
