Qianpima is anGie seah, Aya Sekine, Ian Woo, and Wu Jun Han. Qianpima started life as a band initiated by seah for her performance and sound artwork ‘A Thousand Horses Running in My Head’. Inspired by the use of hypnotic rhythms and drone sounds, the music made by this improvisational unit intuitively led them to incorporate elements of song structures as form and direction. These early experimentations in music were performed at the NTU Center for Contemporary Art and the Art Science Museum in Singapore. Popular and folk music elements are often woven with the influences of the blues and dub music. Imagery is also used as a starting point in song titles to suggest filmic worlds with fictional environments and characters. Qianpima, derived from the Chinese character ‘a thousand horses’, is a sonic and emotional rumble characterized by the unknown direction of oncoming horses as a metaphor for the sound of improvisation.
